Business of Software

The *business* of software

So tell me ... who's going to BoS 2009?

I am coming from a bloody long way away. In fact I'll put it out there that I'm travelling the most miles to get to this conference and if anyone's travelling more kms than me I'll buy them two rounds of top shelf tequilla :p

But what about the rest of ya? Who's going to this year's conference?

I sure would like to get to know some of you online before hand to maximise the value of my trip. Don't want to be sitting by myself at the foreigners table ya know ;p

So this is the official call to y'all to drop a note about yourself if you're going to the BoS 2009.

Cher (as we say in Kiwiland)

Wow $170 mil, Mint has definitely proven to BE a mint then for Aaron Patzer - v. cool software indeed and so freshly presented. Convincing people to use online budgeting software in an environment where you hear that even big names like Hotmail and Gmail are being targeted by hackers must be a challenge.

7 weeks on $2000 in the UK is impressive - that is truly travelling on the smell of an oily rag. Shame I can't tent in Union Square behind some pub, this trip is going bludgeon my wallet to death! :p

I've heard that London is the city with the 4th largest population of Kiwis (New Zealanders) and they're generally found lying unconscious behind pubs so it would be unusual if you hadn't bumped into one or two on your adventures.

Yes, I'll be attending BoS 2009.

- Which speaker at BoS 09 most interests you?

Don Norman, since I've always been a fan of his books.

- Where your favourite place you've been on holiday?

Disney World. Really.

- What kind of activity to get into to offset the rigor mortis of software development?

Watching NFL football. It's another type of rigor mortis, but at least the chair is more comfortable and the screen's bigger. ;-)

- What's your home town and what's big in the news there today?

Fort Worth, Texas and the big news is all the rain we've been having lately.

- When people ask you what you do at parties, do you lie?

Nope.

Here goes...

- Which speaker at BoS 09 most interests you?
Kathy Sierra and Darmesh Shah. Also, want to talk with other software business people. I feel pretty isolated living in Michigan. Not a lot of other software businesses around here.
- Where your favourite place you've been on holiday?
My back yard. Also Anna Maria Island in Florida.
- What kind of activity to get into to offset the rigor mortis of software development?
Sports. We have a spirited volleyball match every Thursday at lunch. Nothing rejuvenates the spirit like running, laughing, and hitting things in the middle of the day.
- What's your home town and what's big in the news there
East Lansing, Michigan. The Spartans winning and losing games.
- When people ask you what you do at parties, do you lie?
Almost always. Sometimes I give the truth a shot and end up yabbering on about development cycles and trial models before I just give up and say computer stuff.

I too enjoy running, laughing and hitting things ... it's a great way to maintain a sharply focused and motivated team of developers - in fact I find all 2 of these activities crop up in almost every code review session. :p

Hmm ... why couldn't BOS have been on Anna Maria Island? ... in summer!
